While EWP has been created by universities with project funding since 2012, EWP services have been delivered in the context of a framework service contract signed with the European Commission in October 2021. This contract has enabled the adoption of EWP by Higher Education Institutions at large, with an adoption rate close to 100% across more than 3,000 institutions.
This framework contract was concluded in April 2026, and the EWP Consortium partners have applied for an EU grant back in February which, if successfully completed, will provide co-financing for the infrastructure for the remainder of 2026. For the time being, the EWP Consortium is ensuring that all services remain fully available.
These discussions are taking place as the European Commission has announced plans for introducing ESCI+ in 2028. What this development means for EWP as a community-driven infrastructure will be discussed at the EWP Convention in Naples in June 2026.
