European Student Card Initiative at EAIE 2025: Highlights from Gothenburg

The European Student Card Initiative (ESCI) was prominently featured at the EAIE Conference in September, where more than 7,300 higher education professionals gathered to discuss developments in international education. Throughout the event, ESCI representatives presented ongoing work and upcoming priorities for digital student mobility.

From Infrastructure Stability to Core Mobility Processes

A panel session outlined the initiative’s direction for 2025 and beyond, with the European Commission highlighting two key priorities for the remainder of the Erasmus+ programme: maintaining a stable digital infrastructure and strengthening core processes such as nominations and transcripts of records. Representatives from the University of Iceland and KU Leuven also shared how Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) has simplified their daily administrative tasks.

Practical Insights and the New ESCI Champions Cohort

Several mini‑sessions at the European Commission booth gave participants practical insights into ESCI’s main components, including the EWP nominations module, the European Student Card and its benefits, and examples from newly appointed ESCI Champions. The conference also marked the launch meeting of the 2025–2027 ESCI Champions cohort, hosted by the University of Gothenburg.

During their gathering, Champions discussed how to promote wider uptake of ESCI, set implementation goals and contribute to digitalisation priorities for the next Erasmus+ programme. They also committed to sharing best practices, testimonials and supporting national and European‑level events over the coming years.
