EWP – a sneak peek into digitalizing certificates of arrival and departure

EWP – a sneak peek into digitalizing certificates of arrival and departure

At the end of 2025 EWP reached an important milestone, with all core cross-border processes – inter-institutional agreements, nominations, learning agreements and transcripts of records – having stable specifications. Does this mean the digital transformation journey is over? Not quite…

For some time now, the EWP governance bodies representing IROs have flagged the importance of taking steps to streamline and digitalise the exchange of certificates of arrival and departure (or CAD, also known as confirmations of stay). This has been confirmed within the EWP community as part of diverse range of surveys and consultation activities, where we gathered very positive feedback about the perspective of adding CAD functionality to EWP.

Does EWP currently support CAD?

No, certificates of arrival and departure are not yet a functionality that is supported by EWP.

 Will EWP support CAD?

Work is already underway to make it possible that this functionality becomes available in the not-too-distant future. There were already three focus group meetings/workshops where the design of this functionality has been discussed among practitioners, and this work will continue and be consolidated through the relevant EWP governance bodies. The business analysis will then inform the preparation and deployment of technical solutions.

The fact that more than 2500 higher education institutions already have access to the latest nomination functionality will also play a positive role in this regard, since these APIs already support some elements/data points that will be integral to enabling CAD in EWP.
