What is the SCHAC code?
In the Erasmus Without Paper ecosystem, effective digital collaboration between higher education institutions requires precise and stable mechanisms for uniquely identifying each participating organisation. The SCHAC code (short for SCHema for ACademia) fulfills this role by providing a unique, domain-based identifier assigned to each institution. It is essential for ensuring seamless data exchange and interoperability across various platforms and services within the network.
The SCHAC code is derived from the institution’s registered internet domain name. For example, an institution with the domain “http://university.edu ” would have a SCHAC code that corresponds directly to this domain.
Why is the SCHAC code “frozen”?
Once a SCHAC code is established and used in active data exchanges, it becomes “frozen”. This means it cannot be changed, even if the institution’s domain name or branding changes. This rule protects the stability of digital interactions and prevents confusion or errors in identifying institutions.
There are three simple but critical rules governing SCHAC code usage:
-
Immutability: Once in use, the SCHAC code must remain unchanged
-
Continuity: Even if an institution changes its name or domain, it must continue using the original SCHAC code within the EWP network
-
Uniqueness: Each SCHAC code must be unique to prevent identification conflicts
These rules are essential for maintaining reliable data exchange within the EWP network, where SCHAC codes play a critical role in key processes such as inter-institutional agreements and the creation of ESI. Without this consistency, digital cooperation among universities would lack the reliability and efficiency necessary for smooth operation.
